Description
On this full day tour from Lisbon we will explore four unique places: The Catholic Sanctuary of Fátima, the Monastery of Batalha, the fishing village of Nazaré and the romantic medieval town of Óbidos.
We start the day driving to Fátima, crossing the agricultural region of Ribatejo. Upon arrival in Fátima, one of the most important Marian shrines in the world, we visit the two basilicas of the sanctuary – Nossa Senhora do Rosário and Santíssima Trindade – and the chapel of Apparitions, the first chapel to be built right after the apparitions of the Virgin, in 1917.
Afterwards, we continue to the town of Batalha, where we visit its imposing monastery, built in 1386 by D. João I of Portugal, in gratitude to the Virgin Mary for the victory in the Battle of Aljubarrota. This Dominican monastery – named a UNESCO World Heritage Site – is a beautiful example of Gothic architecture in Portugal.
The journey continues through the countryside to the picturesque village of Nazaré, where we have free time for lunch. With its old fishing traditions, beautiful beaches and regional restaurants, nowadays Nazaré is also known among surfers, for having the biggest waves in the world. Nazaré also has one of the most well known panoramic views of the portuguese coast, overlooking the Atlantic.
Last but not least… Óbidos… a charming medieval town built inside the walls of a 12th century castle, an authentic journey into the past, with its whitewashed houses covered with flowers and tiles. Free time to roam through its winding streets and taste the famous “Ginjinha de Óbidos” – a sour cherry liquor served in a chocolate cup – before returning to Lisbon.
